woe_bonnet Getting roundly baked and settling into a rocking chair to take in this pastoral delight, has been one of the most rewarding choices I've made in months. Years, perhaps. Favorite track: Pleasant, This Garden.

Pleasant, and weird enough to be interesting.

Charlie Moonbeam I accidentally listened to "Noonday Yellows" 40 times in a row one day and I fell totally in love with it.

Ernest Hood's soundscapes are rich and full of humanity. Favorite track: Noonday Yellows.

Joe Borreson Truly a very autumnal album, percolating with rural nostalgia and pastoral dreaminess. You can almost feel the late afternoon sunshine on your bare arms, as perfect field recordings of birdsong and creeks flow past while zither melodies and strums wash over you. Absolutely gorgeous. Favorite track: Noonday Yellows.
WOODS

WOODS I ordered the collection of Ernest Hood paper ephemera offered by this label. It's a great compliment to his albums. Unfortunately, my original order was damaged in shipping, and the folks behind this label couldn’t have been nicer about replacing the order (and throwing in a bonus CD). Great label, nice people. Support them!

  • In conjunction with the release of Ernest Hood’s unheard archival album Back to the Woodlands, and in cooperation with the late artist’s estate, we are offering an expanded portfolio of printed ephemera from the workbench of the beloved Oregonian musician and documentarian. Sourced by Freedom To Spend’s very own Jed Bindeman on an expedition to the Hood’s famed farm property in Newberg, Oregon, these are various prints produced by Ernest, all featuring his original artwork.

Distributed by Ernest with his mail order service to fellow homebound Oregonians, and used as promotional fodder around the Portland community hub that was KBOO Radio, these are materials with a rich history and direct connection to / reflection of Ernest. Suitable for framing, filing, or flipping through when feeling nostalgic for a bygone era. An opportunity to own an incredible collection of Oregon, and Ernest Hood, history.

The eleven prints are stored in a sturdy kraft board portfolio with resealable flaps, hand stamped on the front, and hand numbered on the back in an edition of 67. Portfolios will be shipped media mail, and packaged between 13" x 16" corrugated sheets for assured safety.

Limited edition of 50 available only from Freedom To Spend. Does not include LP (only portfolio + digital download of the album)

about

Written and recorded between 1972 and 1982 in Western Oregon, Back to the Woodlands is a previously unreleased, and nearly lost, album made by Ernest Hood during the same era as his near mythical album Neighborhoods. A visionary combination of field recordings, zithers, and synthesizers, Back to the Woodlands offers an unprecedented depth of access to this singular artistic mind.

Working closely with his estate to maintain his original vision, Freedom to Spend has restored and remastered this never before released, lost masterpiece by Ernest Hood from the original tapes. Ernest Hood’s Back to the Woodlands will be issued on vinyl, as well as on CD in combination with its contemporary Where the Woods Begin, with new liner notes by Michael Klausman.
